MANCHESTER (WGME) – Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows has posted a statement to Facebook, saying her house was swatted and that she’s received threats as a result of taking former President Donald Trump off the primary ballot.

In her Facebook post, Bellows says her home address was posted online and that her house was swatted. Swatting is when a fake emergency call is made to bring a strong number of law enforcement to a particular address, usually to scare the subject.

The Maine State Police say that Augusta Regional Communication Center received a call on Friday night from an unknown male saying that he had broken into a home in the Augusta area.

State Police responded to the home for what was ultimately a swatting call. Police confirmed that it was the home of Bellows and that no one was inside the home.

Troopers continued a check on the home at the request of Bellows. Police say nothing suspicious was found and that the incident remains under investigation.

Bellows says in her statement that she was not home at the time because she is away for the holiday weekend.

Bellows says that her and her staff received non-stop threatening communications all day on Friday. Bellows called this behavior “unacceptable” in her statement. Bellows says these threats are “designed to scare not only me but also others into silence, to send a message.”

Bellows says in her statement that fake images of her and fake text threads attributed to her have been posted online.

She adds she’s “grateful to have such an amazing team of employees at the Department of Secretary of State,” and is grateful for the support from law enforcement during this time.

Bellows says in part,

I know from my previous work that dehumanizing a person is the first step in paving the way for attacks and violence against them. These dehumanizing images and threatening communications directed at me and people I love are dangerous. We should be able to agree to disagree on important issues without threats and violence. So my friends, please let’s channel love, respect and kindness and stand up for those Maine values that have always made our state the way life should be. I love you and am grateful for you.

Bellows says she will be off social media this weekend.

This comes after a historic ruling in which Bellows ruled that former President Donald Trump will be taken off the 2024 primary ballot in Maine. Bellows ruled President Trump violated the 14th amendment and his oath of office by engaging in an insurrection against the United States on January 6th, 2021.
